I exported about 2,000 contacts into a CSV file, but when I try importing it into my new phone, all the details get jumbled. First name goes into notes, phone number lands in another field, and some contacts disappear. Google Contacts also messes up the formatting. I think the only proper way is to do CSV to vCard conversion, but random online tools either miss fields or change characters. I need a method where I can manually map columns before exporting. Anyone who has done this before what’s the most reliable way to convert CSV to vCard without breaking the data?

When‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ I attempted to import an old CSV file into contacts, I had the same problem as you. What‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ happened was, phone numbers were entered in the wrong fields, and a few of the names were getting shifted to the next row without anyone knowing. Later on, I discovered that the CSV file was oddly formatted; there were rows that had more commas than others, and there were some cells which were ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌empty. Whenever a converter takes such files, it mismatches the mapping by default. What worked for me was to open the CSV file by myself, take out the commas that were there by mistake, and check that each column was consistent. In addition, it was great to use a tool that allowed you to preview and map the fields manually. I chose DataVare CSV to vCard Converter because it displayed the CSV grid before saving, so I could properly align the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌fields.
